Live 1974 was recorded in concert on 23 March 1974 at the Penny Station, a club in Griessem, Germany, and released by Grönland in October 2007 and in the United States by Water Records on 11 December 2007. Harmonia recorded and edited the tape themselves. Rother has called it the best Harmonia gig they ever played, and Roedelius recalled 50 to 60 people in a small, hot room. The record has no applause. Rother suspects the audience was stoned or could not tell when the pieces ended. David Stubbs of the Guardian described the Penny Station as a disused railway station He singled out the fifteen-minute Holta-Polta, whose title echoes its clicking, rotating rhythm, and noted that the band misused a fadeout device, which pulled the track to near silence under the audience chatter.

Mark Richardson of Pitchfork, reviewing the box that includes it, called Live 1974 the real heart of the set. He described the music as thick with drones, highly repetitious and often flat-out gorgeous. The band reunited in 2007, after the album was released.
