The album gathers four pieces Budd wrote between 1972 and 1975, including Madrigals of the Rose Angel, the work that brought him back to composing. Eno produced it at Basing Street in November 1976 with a band that included the saxophonist Marion Brown, Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, John White and the harpist Maggie Thomas, and released it on Obscure in 1978; Editions EG reissued it in 1981. Bill Nelson called it a work of aching beauty, like nothing he had heard before.
