An early version was recorded in Rio de Janeiro on 21 January 1993 with Love on guitar and vocals and Patty Schemel on drums. Hole played the song live in July 1993 at the Clapham Grand in London and at the Phoenix Festival. The album version was recorded at Triclops in October 1993. Pfaff contributed the chorus lines about making a bed and lying in it, taken from a song called Limited Edition that she had written with Janitor Joe. Love and Erlandson wrote the song.
It was released as the lead single on 21 March 1994, in the United States on Tim/Kerr Records on pink vinyl, with Rock Star in an alternate mix on the European B-side and the Wipers' Over the Edge on the American one. Sophie Muller directed the video, a beauty pageant in which Love plays the title character. Rolling Stone noted the "sing-along clatter" of the song. In 2012 Love, Erlandson, Auf der Maur and Schemel played it together at a New York party for the documentary Hit So Hard. The Afghan Whigs and Daniel Victor of Neverending White Lights have covered it.
