Angel opens Mezzanine, released on 20 April 1998 by Circa and Virgin and later a single from the album. It is a new version of Andy's You Are My Angel, the title of his 1973 Trojan album, and Hinds is credited as writer. The Guardian notes his unforgettable call of "loveyouloveyoulove" and long notes with a low-frequency vibrato.
Angel is the song he has sung most often as a guest with Massive Attack, some 140 times. Mezzanine topped the charts in the UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.
