Andy wrote it and Coxsone Dodd produced it at Studio One. It first appeared as Sky Larking on a 1971 Studio One compilation, Jamaica Today, and after it caught on with the sound systems Dodd issued it as a single on his Bongo Man subsidiary, with a version on the B-side. In August 1972 it reached number one on the Jamaican chart published in The Gleaner. The lyric scolds young men who loiter on street corners holding out their hands for spare change.
Andy rarely went out, and he first understood what the song was doing when he heard Prince Patrick play it at Skateland in Half-Way Tree. In his words, that was when he realised his songs were "mashing up the place". He put its success down to living upright. In the mid-1970s he cut it again for Bunny Lee, with The Aggrovators and a King Tubby dub, and in 1991 he sang lines from it in Massive Attack's Five Man Army on Blue Lines.
Live and later
It is the song he has played most on stage, by setlist.fm's count, from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2000 to Lowlands in 2025. He has recorded it many times since, with Sly & Robbie on Livin' It Up and with Jah Wobble on Timeless Roots (2024), and MusicBrainz lists some seventy recordings of it under his name. Garnett Silk's cover revived it in Jamaica, and Madness have played it live. The first upload in the hypersongs web is the Bunny Lee re-recording, released as official audio by Bunny Lee's label, and the second is a fan upload.
