Produced by Coxsone Dodd, who also recorded and mixed it with Sylvan Morris, and played by Sound Dimension, Dodd's house band led by Leroy Sibbles. The cover shows Andy with a guitar in front of H.D. Repole's Memorial to 1865 in National Heroes Park, Kingston. Reissues add Oh Youth Man and Night Owl.

In 2012 a Jamaica Observer list of the top 50 reggae albums, made for the island's fiftieth anniversary, placed it 16th. Mojo put it 43rd among the 50 greatest reggae albums in 2014, and GQ named it among ten classic LPs of reggae's golden era in 2016. It is a different record from the 1996 Melankolic best-of with the same title.
