Flutes was a promotional single, free with pre-orders, with a video on 15 March 2012. Night and Day was the lead single on 4 June 2012, and a Daphni mix of it came out on Record Store Day on 21 April. How Do You Do? followed on 10 September and Don't Deny Your Heart on 26 November.

Taylor described several routes into the songs. Now There Is Nothing was dreamed. Flutes grew from instrumentals Goddard sent by email, to which Taylor added percussion, chord changes and singing. Don't Deny Your Heart and How Do You Do? were written by the two of them together.

Pitchfork's Larry Fitzmaurice called it their most playful and colorful record yet, an album-length version of the sounds of the studio game in Shake a Fist, and said the songwriting was as strong and intricate as on The Warning. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis wrote that it never feels forced, while Slant's Kevin Liedel called it a cut-and-paste job.
