Produced by QDIII, Madness 4 Real, Sir Jinx, Laylaw, D'Maq and Cube, it was recorded at Echo Sound, Skip Saylor and Westlake studios in Los Angeles. Singles were Really Doe (October 1993), You Know How We Do It (February 1994) and Bop Gun (One Nation) (July 1994), the last of which lasts 11:17 on the album and samples Funkadelic. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 with 215,000 copies, topped the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart and was certified platinum on 1 February 1994.

Some critics at the time saw it as pandering to gangsta rap and as toning down the sociopolitical content of his earlier records, and its standing has risen since. Down for Whatever gained fresh popularity after appearing in the 1999 film Office Space.
