Recorded at Trident Studios with Robin Lumley producing and Jerry Smith engineering, Deep End is built around two keyboardists, Zoe Kronberger and Frank Roberts, with Dan K. Brown on bass guitar and Neville Whitehead on acoustic bass. Hugh Hopper and Laurence Scott appear only on Hopper's Fonebone. Henri Strik of Background Magazine wrote that the twin-keyboard approach gave a more intricate, textured and melodic presence. Crunch Cake was later included on Strut's 2008 compilation Disco Not Disco.
