- Released
- 24 June 1980

- Asylum
- Producer
- Jackson Browne and Greg Ladanyi
Hold Out is the only Browne album to reach number one on the Billboard chart. It was certified gold and platinum in 1980 and multi-platinum in 2001. Browne and Greg Ladanyi produced it, Ladanyi engineered it, and Doug Sax mastered it at The Mastering Lab.
Of Missing Persons was written for Inara George, the daughter of Lowell George, who had died a year before the album came out. The phrase comes from a line in Little Feat's Long Distance Love. Call It a Loan was written with David Lindley and Hold On Hold Out with Craig Doerge.
William Ruhlmann of AllMusic wrote that the album "represented an earnest attempt that nevertheless fell short." The New York Times called it "a fine record; perhaps his finest, overall."
