Lawyers in Love was Browne's fourth straight top ten album. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for 33 weeks. Four of its eight tracks were released as singles, and the title song reached number 13 on the Hot 100 with one of his first videos on MTV. Rick Vito and Danny Kortchmar replaced David Lindley on guitar. It was certified gold in 1983 and platinum in 2001.
Engineer and co-producer Greg Ladanyi said Browne wanted to be downtown, where the people were, so the band set up in a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles that was turned into a studio. The tape kept rolling nearly all the time and there were very few overdubs.
Christopher Connelly wrote in Rolling Stone that it was "a more nervy, intelligent LP than its predecessor." Robert Christgau called it "a satire on, celebration of, and lament for the upper-middle classmates" an Orange County liberal knows.
