Jimmy Jones and Otis Blackwell wrote it. Jones recorded it in 1959 in a version reworked by Blackwell, who produced the session and whistles on it, and it reached number two on the Hot 100 in 1960. Del Shannon took it to 22 in 1964. Taylor's recording, from JT, is slower. It reached number four on the Hot 100 and number two on Cash Box, topped the Adult Contemporary chart and the RPM chart in Canada, and won him the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Peter Asher produced, and Leah Kunkel sings the "comma comma" parts.
AllMusic's Jason Elias wrote that where Jones was "chipper and a little obnoxious," Taylor is "so laid back it's almost somnolent." Jones accused Culture Club of borrowing the "comma, comma" section for Karma Chameleon, which Boy George denied doing consciously.
