Taylor wrote it with JD Souther and the guitarist Waddy Wachtel, and Souther sings harmony. It was cut at Record One in Los Angeles with Peter Asher producing and strings written and conducted by Gene Page. Taylor described it as a tender song about how hard it is to remain friends with both people after a long relationship ends. He denied it was about his own marriage and said it concerned the former wife of a mutual friend. Sheila Weller, in Girls Like Us, names Betsy Asher, Peter Asher's former wife, while Souther, asked by Songfacts in 2011, would not name anyone. Taylor heard in it "a relentless bolero quality".

Released as a single backed with Believe It or Not, it reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1981 and number five on the adult contemporary chart, and it remains his last US Top 40 single. The Rolling Stone Album Guide admired it as a divorce song, though Don Shewey in Rolling Stone dismissed it as catchy and empty.

Live

setlist.fm logs only eleven Taylor performances, nearly all on the 1981 tour, from Queens in March through Radio City Music Hall and the Nippon Budokan, with the last in Sydney in January 1986. The upload in the hypersongs web is the studio duet, running about fifteen seconds shorter than the album version.
