The basic tracks were recorded live at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood on 26 January 1987, in a 22-song set split into acoustic and electric halves. Members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Henry Rollins were in the audience, along with 150 record executives whom Farrell insulted from the stage. The band then went to The Edge Studio in Los Angeles with the producer Mark Linett for extensive overdubs, and the whole album cost $4,000. Triple X released it on 15 May 1987.

Ten songs were chosen. Two are covers, the Velvet Underground's Rock & Roll and the Rolling Stones' Sympathy for the Devil, retitled Sympathy. Jane Says and Pigs in Zen were re-recorded a year later for Nothing's Shocking, and Whores and Chip Away were redone in 2009. Songs that were played that night but left off included Stop!, Three Days, Ocean Size and Mountain Song. The sound mixes punk, heavy metal, funk, goth, psychedelia and folk, under Farrell's heavily echoed voice.
