Warner Bros. released it in November 1990 as the third single from Ritual de lo Habitual. It spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Modern Rock chart and is the band's biggest hit. Different versions turn up on Kettle Whistle and Up from the Catacombs. Rolling Stone dubbed its barking the best use of dog barks since Pet Sounds. Farrell said the dog was Annie, whom he had taken from a shelter and brought to the studio rather than leave at home. When she started barking while he sang in the booth, it ended up on the track by pure coincidence.
Casey Niccoli directed the video, which shows people, the band among them, shoplifting at a grocery store in Venice, California. It won Best Alternative Video at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards and was ranked 47th on VH1's 100 Greatest Videos. The song appears on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, and in 2023 Billboard placed it 62nd among the hundred most successful songs in its alternative chart's history. It was also used on the in-game station Radio X in the 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Live
Writing about the band's 2024 London show, the Guardian's Stevie Chick said Farrell relished every mischievous punk-funk twist of the song.
