Foxy Lady opens the British edition of Are You Experienced. It was cut at CBS on 13 December 1966 with the engineer Mike Ross, and reworked at Olympic on 8 February 1967 with a new bass line from Redding. Hendrix wrote it about Heather Taylor, who later married Roger Daltrey of the Who, though Faye Pridgon has also been suggested. It begins with a note bent under heavy vibrato and a swell of feedback before settling into a rhythm built on the sharp-ninth chord that guitarists call the Hendrix chord. Redding claimed the closing chord was his idea. Reprise released it in December 1967 in the US as Foxey Lady, backed with Hey Joe, and it reached 67 on the Hot 100. Rolling Stone ranked it 153rd on its list of the 500 greatest songs. Every Hendrix lineup played it live.
