Almost every title on the record names a train or a railroad, and Fahey's liner notes talk about train yards, railroad people and his own memories. The Keddie Wye of one title is a rail junction in Plumas County, California, whose two legs run on bridges and meet in a tunnel. The cover reads Railroad I. Fahey said there was never a second volume: Allegiance, which manufactured and marketed the record, insisted on the numeral, and he could not stop them. His wife Melody took the cover photograph.

Terry Staunton in Record Collector heard twangy instrumental laments for the trains of frontier America, and Kris Needs, in notes for Ace, called it a timeless tribute to the railroad. Stylus picked out Oneonta, Imitation Train Whistles/Po' Boy and Afternoon Espee Through Salem. Shanachie reissued it on CD in 1992 as plain Railroad, and Ace did so in 2007.
