Fahey recorded it alone on a 1930s Gibson Recording King guitar, and the three long pieces needed only one edit between them. Their themes draw on his earlier Requiem for Russell Blaine Cooper, When the Catfish Is in Bloom and Dalhart, Texas 1967. The record was dedicated to Swami Satchidananda, and the first pressing came with a four-page pamphlet promoting Yogaville West, the Integral Yoga community in Lake County, California. Ace, which reissued it, calls it his non-Christian religious album. The original labels misspell the title as Fare Foreward Voyagers.
AllMusic's Eugene Chadbourne heard unpredictable miniature symphonies. Reviewing the reissue in Record Collector in 2007, Grahame Bent praised its blend of Zen minimalism and old-fashioned virtuosity. The Spin Alternative Record Guide gave it nine out of ten. Shanachie reissued it on CD in 1992 with new artwork, and Ace followed.
