The song was originally spelled "Give Me Some Truth". Work on it began as early as January 1969 during the Beatles' Get Back sessions, and a recording of the Beatles playing it was officially released in 2021 on the Let It Be 50th Anniversary Edition. Lennon recorded it for Imagine on 25 May 1971 at Ascot Sound Studios, and the overdubbing of his lead vocal on 28 May was filmed. Footage aired on the BBC television show The Old Grey Whistle Test on 12 December 1972. George Harrison plays the slide guitar solo.
The lyrics express Lennon's frustration with politicians, hypocrisy and chauvinism. Lennon said it was an old lick that he had around for a long time and that he again changed the lyrics. Classic Rock's Rob Hughes rated it Lennon's greatest political song, citing its potshots at hypocrites, bigots and Richard Nixon, and the NME's Lisa Wright ranked it his fifth greatest solo song. It was issued in 1982 as the B-side of "Love", and it gave its title to the 2000 documentary Gimme Some Truth: The Making of John Lennon's Imagine Album.
