Lennon began writing it in 1968 as "Child of Nature", after a lecture by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh about a "son of mother nature". He demoed it at George Harrison's home in Esher in May 1968 and jammed it in January 1969 during the Beatles' Get Back sessions as "On the Road to Marrakesh". Eventually the lyrics were replaced with the "Jealous Guy" words for Imagine. The recording was made at Ascot Sound Studios in 1971, with strings added at the Record Plant in New York. Mike Pinder, Joey Molland and Tom Evans played on it, and Nicky Hopkins plays the piano part that runs through the song.
It was not released as a single in Lennon's lifetime. Roxy Music's version, issued in early 1981, reached number one in the United Kingdom and Australia. Lennon's own recording was released as a single in November 1985 and reached number 65 in Britain, and in November 1988 it reached number 80 in the United States. A promotional video made in 1971 shows Lennon and Ono in a hearse travelling from Tittenhurst Park to a lake.
