American IV: The Man Comes Around

Trent Reznor wrote it for Nine Inch Nails in 1994. Cash recorded it in 2002 for American IV with Rick Rubin producing, Mike Campbell on acoustic guitar, Benmont Tench on piano, organ and Mellotron, and Smokey Hormel also playing. It was released as a single in March 2003 with Personal Jesus and Wichita Lineman as B-sides. In 2003 it reached number 25 in Ireland, number 33 on the US Alternative Airplay chart, number 39 in the UK and number 56 on the US Hot Country Songs chart.

Mark Romanek directed the video at Cash's home in Hendersonville and the closed House of Cash museum. He told Rolling Stone in 2003 that they could be extremely candid about the state of Johnny's health. A frail June Carter Cash appears, and she died on 15 May 2003. The video won the 2004 Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video and the Video Music Award for Best Cinematography, and the song was the 2003 Country Music Association Single of the Year. Romanek said Cash called it the best anti-drug song he had heard.

Reznor said that when he first heard it the song sounded alien, and after seeing the video he said it was no longer his.
