Cash wrote and produced the single, released on Columbia in March 1971 from the album of the same name, with Little Bit of Yesterday on the B-side. It reached number three on the country chart and number 58 on the Hot 100. He first performed it after talking with audience members at Vanderbilt University. The lyric explains why he wore black, and protests the treatment of the poor, mass incarceration and the Vietnam War.
