Aka / Darbari / Java: Magic Realism

A trumpet multiplied by computer over Senegalese drums, a pygmy voice and Javanese cascades.

Co-produced by Daniel Lanois, with Abdou M'Boup on drums and a cover painting by Mati Klarwein, the album has a liner note by Hassell that describes a trumpet branched into a chorus by computer, tracing the raga Darbari over Senegalese drumming recorded in Paris, and calls the record a proposal for a coffee-colored classical music of the future.

AllMusic's Brian Olewnick called it an early high-water mark where world and ambient musics meet, and Robert Christgau called it dandy background music.
