The title comes from a paper by Kilton Stewart, who visited the Senoi of Malaya in 1935. Hassell's liner note says a recorded fragment of the Semelai people's watersplash rhythm became the generating force for Malay and a thematic guide for the whole record. Brian Eno plays drums, gongs and bells and mixes several tracks, Michael Brook plays bass, and Walter De Maria is credited with a distant drum on Courage.
Andy Beta, reviewing the 2017 reissue for Pitchfork, heard Chor Moiré as an early use of digital delay that makes the trumpet sound like a skipping CD, and noted that Hassell admitted in the new notes to under-crediting Eno.
