Blue Period is the ninth track on Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street and a rework of Amsterdam Blue (Cortege), the piece at the centre of Hassell's music for Wim Wenders' The Million Dollar Hotel. He had recorded Amsterdam Blue in Amsterdam as a homage to Chet Baker, and on the 2000 soundtrack it ran past nine minutes, played by Hassell with Gregg Arreguin, Jamie Muhoberac and Peter Freeman. ECM described it simply as a remix of a piece first made for a Wenders film. Freeman, who mixed the album, is credited on the track for samples and mixing.
Henry Smith of All About Jazz heard it as the most openly relaxed music on the disc. Tim Owen of The Jazzmann found the whole album meditatively gorgeous, and never more so than here, and Tyran Grillo of ECM Reviews called it the closest the record comes to a painterly aesthetic, half present and half fading away.
Live
Setlist.fm logs it twice in 2009, at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia in February during the American tour and at the Stockholm Jazz Festival on Skeppsholmen in July. The upload in the hypersongs web is the album version.
