Dreaming opens Listening to Pictures (Pentimento Volume One). It came out first as an advance single on 5 April 2018, the day Spin premiered it, two months before the album. It was made at Studio Venice in California, produced by Hassell with Rick Cox, with the album's core group of Cox, John von Seggern and Hugh Marsh.

Marc Weidenbaum of Disquiet heard "offworld bossa nova, post-Singularity jazz", a track that pushes against itself in slow motion, with piano, cymbals and vinyl surface noise before a choir of voices enters in a deep hush. Spin described an asymmetrical, pulsing loop under ominous blasts of trumpet, and Sam Mackay of The Quietus followed the trumpet climbing through a foggy cycle of chords. After Hassell's death, WNYC's New Sounds played it in its 2021 tribute programme, The Jon Hassell Influence. The upload in the hypersongs web is from the 2018 single, the same recording as the album opener.
