Substance was released on 11 July 1988 by Factory Records as the companion to a singles compilation of the same name by New Order. It collects the four non-album singles, Transmission, Komakino, Love Will Tear Us Apart and Atmosphere, together with most of their B-sides and tracks from the early EPs and Factory samplers. The vinyl edition leaves out Komakino. Later CD pressings from London Records carry a mix of She's Lost Control that differs slightly from the single.
It reached number 7 on the UK Albums Chart and number 146 on the Billboard 200, the band's only US chart appearance. The sleeve spells the title in Wim Crouwel's New Alphabet, and the letters read as Subst1mce. Pitchfork noted in 2007 that it was the only single disc to hold Love Will Tear Us Apart, Atmosphere and Transmission together.
