It was the first song Daft Punk recorded for Yeezus, with drums from unused material for Random Access Memories. Many listeners guessed that it sampled Marilyn Manson's The Beautiful People, but the liner notes confirmed otherwise. Mike Dean said it was nearly left off because it sounded too much like a soccer song. Lupe Fiasco said in November 2013 that he was unsure what it was meant to be about.
West and Daft Punk produced it, with Gesaffelstein, Brodinski, Dean, Lupe Fiasco, Jack Donoghue and Noah Goldstein as additional producers. It was released as a single on 19 June 2013, the day after the album, and charted in the United States, the UK, Ireland, France, Canada, Belgium and Australia. It is platinum in the US, the UK and Denmark. Nick Knight directed the video, which uses a computer-generated West. It leaked on 8 July 2013 and was released officially in an interactive form on 21 July.
Live
West played it on Saturday Night Live on 18 May 2013, before the album's release. He performed it at Glastonbury in 2015, where Lee Nelson interrupted in a Leezus T-shirt, on the opening night of the Saint Pablo Tour in Indianapolis on 25 August 2016, and at the Free Larry Hoover Benefit Concert in Los Angeles on 9 December 2021.
