The beat came from S1 (Symbolyc One) and was originally meant for Rhymefest. S1 said there were eight or nine versions of the song. Recorded mainly in Hawaii in 2009 and 2010, it samples King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man, Continent Number 6's Afromerica and Cold Grits' It's Your Thing, with additional vocals by Dwele. West said in an outtake from Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap that he had not written his raps down for his first four albums but wrote this one, and that he spent 5,000 hours on Power.

It was released on 1 July 2010 and peaked at 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was nominated for the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance and passed a billion Spotify streams in January 2025. Marco Brambilla directed the video as a single 103-second take, and George Condo painted the cover art. A Jay-Z remix was a GOOD Fridays release on 20 August 2010.

Live

He debuted it at the 2010 BET Awards and played it on Saturday Night Live on 2 October 2010 on an all-white stage, replacing a profane verse with a new one. He opened his Coachella set with it in April 2011 and performed it on the Watch the Throne Tour.
