It was the band's first full-length since Strangeland, after a hiatus from early 2014 to late 2018. Keane produced it with David Kosten at Sea Fog Studios. The Way I Feel premiered on BBC Radio 2 on 6 June 2019, and Love Too Much followed there on 8 August. Cenzo Townshend mixed the record, and Owen Pallett arranged horns and programmed on Stupid Things. The deluxe edition adds five bonus tracks, including three Sea Fog acoustic sessions.
It peaked at number two in the UK. Metacritic averages 68. AllMusic's Neil Z. Yeung called it a satisfying return to form, and The Guardian's Rachel Aroesti described it as "a warts-and-all document of the demise of a long-term relationship".
