It was the first full-length since Perfect Symmetry and the first with Jesse Quin as an official member. The band began demos in 2010 and met the producer Dan Grech-Marguerat in May 2011. Rice-Oxley called him a massive Keane fan and said they had loved his work on The Vaccines' debut. Rice-Oxley said they wanted the record less production-led, with the songs themselves made as good as possible, and Chaplin called Perfect Symmetry a bit self-indulgent by comparison. Dave Fridmann added programming to Sovereign Light Café and On the Road. Grech-Marguerat engineered and mixed, and Bob Ludwig mastered the deluxe edition.

Silenced by the Night was first performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on 12 March 2012 and released the next day outside the UK. Disconnected followed on 27 April, and its video won Best Video at the Q Awards on 22 October 2012. Sovereign Light Café, released on 23 July, is named for a café on the seafront at Bexhill-on-Sea, near Battle, where the band grew up. The album sold 47,839 copies in its UK first week, was certified gold, reached number one in Ireland and the Netherlands and peaked at 17 in the US. Metacritic averages 60. The BBC's Chris Roberts called it "an unabashed scurry back to the comfort zone". The deluxe edition runs to 16 tracks, four more than the standard release.
