Rice-Oxley composed it in 2001, and James Sanger is credited as the fourth writer. It first appeared as a B-side on the Fierce Panda release of Everybody's Changing in May 2003. As the third single from Hopes and Fears it became the band's third consecutive top ten hit in the UK, at number 10.
Rice-Oxley explained on the official message board that it is about feeling left behind by an old friend or lover, and hoping to be reunited one day. He called it a sad and angry song, but also full of hope. He suggested that a hospital patient who spends a long time in bed can become bedshaped, and said he wanted to suggest old age and frailty. The song is in E major at 76 beats per minute.
Corin Hardy directed the video, basing it on his 2003 stop-motion short Butterfly. The band appear as animation, and Hardy's friend David Lupton hand-drew 500 pictures of them in a week. Vittorio Grigolo recorded an Italian-language version called Cosi, and Marillion recorded a cover on their live album Friends.
