Rice-Oxley composed it in 2001, just after Dominic Scott left. The Fierce Panda single, the band's first commercial release, came out on CD on 12 May 2003 in a run of 1,500 and reached 122 in the UK. Fierce Panda's Simon Williams had offered to put it out after seeing a gig at the Betsey Trotwood in London in December 2002, and Steve Lamacq made it his Radio 1 single of the week on 19 April 2003. Legend has it that it was recorded in a back room of Rice-Oxley's parents' house on borrowed equipment that broke, so the mix was done at another house.

Re-recorded at Helioscentric Studios in winter 2003, it came out on Island on 3 May 2004, a week before the album, and reached four in the UK. The song is about working out where you are while the people around you go off and do different things. It was written while the band was struggling to get anywhere and watching friends leave Battle and get on with their lives. Bedshaped, the B-side of the first single, later appeared on the album.

The Conservative Party played the song at its manifesto launch on 13 April 2010. Hughes said on Twitter that he was horrified and would not vote for them. Lily Allen recorded a cover in 2006.
