Preceded by the single On Call, a hit in both the UK and Ireland, the third album opens with the seven-minute Knocked Up. It debuted at number one in the UK and Ireland and entered the European chart at number 25. NME's Gavin Haynes later described it as monolithic, with a wagon-paced, chorus-free opener. Pitchfork heard in Knocked Up a swampland soap opera, and said the band had hopped on Bono's wagon.

NME ranked it number 6 among the albums of the year, Rolling Stone placed it at number 31 on its list of the best albums of 2007, and Clash named it number 3 on its 2009 Clash Essential 50.
