Ambient 3: Day of Radiance

The third record in Eno's Ambient series: fast, gamelan-like dances and long, beatless meditations on treated zither and dulcimer.
Laraaji, 1980

Released
August 1980
Label
Editions EG
Producer
Brian Eno

Laraaji plays hammered dulcimer and a 36-string zither in open tuning, which Brian Eno treated and amplified. Eno also produced the record and made the cover. Its three Dance pieces are quick and gamelan-like, its two Meditations slow and beatless. Machinery noise from the building leaked into the quiet passages, and the release was held back six months until a quieter studio could be found. It followed Music for Airports and The Plateaux of Mirror in the Ambient series, appeared in Britain as EGAMB 003 and in the United States as EGS 203, and was the first album credited to Laraaji. AllMusic and Record Collector both rate it four out of five.
