The backing track was laid down on 12 November 1975 at Musicland in Munich. Jones played an eight-string Alembic bass, which gave the track a distinctive tone. Plant wrote the lyrics from travelling across Africa with Page in mid-1975, and Page added six guitars in the long overdubbing session at the end of the recording period.

With Nobody's Fault but Mine, it was one of only two Presence songs played in full on stage while the band was active, joining the set for the 1977 US tour and staying through the last concerts in 1980.
