Trampled Under Foot grew from a jam driven by Jones on the Clavinet and went through several arrangement changes while the band argued about the style. Bonham decided it was too soulful and recast it as funk, and he suggested that Page play a riff throughout instead of chords. The lyrics are a run of double entendres about driving and cars.

It was released as a US single on 2 April 1975, with Black Country Woman as the B-side, and was a top 40 hit. It became a popular live piece from 1975 on, and Plant later revived it on his solo tours. Jones has credited Stevie Wonder's Superstition (1972) as the inspiration for the beat, which he played on a clavinet.
