Roy Orbison recorded it at the end of 1961 and put it on his 1963 album In Dreams. Ronstadt's version, with Don Henley singing backup, reached number three on the Hot 100 in late 1977 and held there for four weeks. It was number two on the country chart and number three on the easy listening chart, was certified Gold in January 1978 and later Platinum, and was nominated for the Grammy for Record of the Year.

In 1978 she released a Spanish version, Lago Azul (Blue Bayou), translated by her father Gilbert Ronstadt. She sang the song on The Muppet Show, and her recording is heard in the films Man on Fire (2004) and American Made (2017). The single ran 3:57, with Old Paint on the other side.
