Clint Ballard Jr. wrote it, and Dee Dee Warwick first performed it for Jubilee in 1963, with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller producing. Betty Everett's Vee-Jay version reached number 51 on the Hot 100 that year, and the Swinging Blue Jeans took it to number three in the UK in 1964. Ronstadt began closing her live shows with it in early 1973, after Kenny Edwards suggested it, and sang it on The Midnight Special in December 1973.

The first backing track, cut on 1 July 1974, was vetoed by Ronstadt as the wrong groove. The final recording was made on 5 July. Ed Black started a riff on his Les Paul, Edwards echoed it in octaves on bass, and Andrew Gold added drums, then guitars, piano and percussion with Asher. Gregory Rose's strings were added at AIR Studios in late August, and Asher conceived the long held final note. Capitol chose it over When Will I Be Loved as the lead single a week after the album came out.

It reached number one on the Hot 100 chart dated 15 February 1975, her only song to do so. Later she said she thought the production was very good but that she had not sung it very well. Van Halen covered it on Van Halen II in 1979.
