Gold Against the Soul

The second album, produced by Dave Eringa, with lyrics less political and more personal.
Manic Street Preachers, 1993

Released
1993
Label
Columbia
Producer
Dave Eringa

Released on Columbia in 1993, it reached number 8 in the UK and later went Gold. Dave Eringa produced again, and Bradfield said the band chose him over a mainstream producer because such producers have their own sound and vision. Compared with the debut, the lyrics are less political and more personal.

Four singles came from it: "From Despair to Where", "La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)", "Roses in the Hospital" and "Life Becoming a Landslide". "Roses in the Hospital" reached number 15, the highest chart position of any single from their first three albums. Reviews were mixed. The NME called the album "confusing" and "too much Slash and not enough burn", while Select called it "a mammoth development even from their excellent debut". The band have named it their least favourite album.
