Named after a German archipelago, it follows 100th Window by seven years and brought Marshall back for the first time since Mezzanine. It was preceded by the Splitting the Atom EP on 4 October 2009, and was known during its making as LP5 and, in Del Naja's early working title, Weather Underground. Marshall co-wrote every track but produced only Splitting the Atom, Paradise Circus and Saturday Come Slow. The record is dedicated to Jonny Dollar, who co-produced Blue Lines.

Horace Andy sings most of it, with Tunde Adebimpe, Martina Topley-Bird, Damon Albarn, Guy Garvey and Hope Sandoval as guests. Adrian Utley of Portishead plays guitar on Saturday Come Slow. Billy Fuller plays bass, and the drummers are Jerry Fuchs and Damon Reece. Del Naja said it had a more organic feel than 100th Window. Girl I Love You reworks a song Andy wrote in his solo career. Paradise Circus became the theme of the BBC drama Luther, and Burial remixed it for a 2011 single paired with Four Walls. The album went Gold in the UK and peaked at number 6. Pitchfork's Nate Patrin described its mood as a drowsy, half-formed gloom but picked out Girl I Love You as an exception. The Atlas Air EP followed in November 2010 in aid of War Child.
