Richter described the album to NPR Classical in 2017 as a response to people downloading ringtones: he saw a missed opportunity for composers in a billion small loudspeakers walking around the planet, and thought of each fragment as a postcard into somebody's life. The 24 pieces are variations on basic material, scored for strings, piano and electronics.
It was recorded at Abbey Road, Cava, Castlesound and Eastcote and mastered at Electric Mastering in London. Louisa Fuller plays the violin solos. Joe Tangari of Pitchfork found the album frequently haunting, noted that the 24 tracks total about half an hour, and picked out the hair-raising violin of A Sudden Manhattan of the Mind. Deutsche Grammophon reissued it on 25 April 2014.
