The band lived in a Detroit studio for a week with engineer Chris Koltay, then added guitar solos, percussion and ambience in Niger. Seth Manchester mixed it, Heba Kadry mastered it, and Robert Beatty drew the cover. Moctar explained that Ilana means the creator in Tamasheq. It scored 88 on Metacritic, and Pitchfork's Andy Beta heard a spontaneous, celebratory set of incandescent guitar music.
