The album grew from Can I Get a Witness?, the 2016 multimedia project she made for the Harlem Stage Gatehouse. Ndegeocello has said Baldwin's nonfiction, especially The Fire Next Time, shaped her understanding of race and class and of what her parents went through. Baldwin received a writing credit on half the tracks. It was announced on 31 May 2024 with the singles Travel and Raise the Roof, and arranged in four parts that match the four sides of a double LP. Staceyann Chin and Hilton Als speak on it, and Chris Bruce, Josh Johnson, Abe Rounds, Julius Rodriguez, Jebin Bruni, Jake Sherman, Paul Thompson, Justin Hicks and Kenita-Miller Hicks play and sing. On 18 June 2024 she played two of its songs, Travel and Love, on NPR's Tiny Desk.
It has a Metacritic score of 84. The Guardian's Dorian Lynskey called it a shapeshifting dialogue with Baldwin's life, work and legacy, and the Observer's Kitty Empire said it jolts and inspires in equal measure. AllMusic's Andy Kellman placed it as the end of an informal trilogy of tribute records after her Nina Simone album and The Magic City. It won the Grammy for Best Alternative Jazz Album.
