Orgasmatron was the first Motörhead album on GWR, a label the band's management set up after the band left Bronze. It was the first with two guitarists, Phil Campbell and Würzel, and the only full studio album with Pete Gill on drums. Lemmy had said that Elektra, MCA, CBS, Epic and Chrysalis had all passed on the band before that.

Bill Laswell produced it at Master Rock Studios in London, and the recording took eleven days. Lemmy said Laswell was good for getting sounds but spoiled the record in the mix, which was better before he took it to New York than after he brought it back. Campbell said the production let the band down and that Laswell tried to meld early hip-hop sounds with their music. The working title was Riding with the Driver, which survives as a song title. By then it was too late for Joe Petagno to change his cover painting, so the train design stayed.

Lemmy said the title track refers to the three things he hated most: organized religion, politics and war. He said the album title had nothing to do with the machine in Woody Allen's film Sleeper, which he had not seen. The tour had its own big prop, an Orgasmatron machine, which, like the iron fist prop of the Iron Fist tour, failed, since it would not fit into most venues. The album reached number 21 in the UK, and the single Deaf Forever reached 67.

The band has announced a 40th anniversary edition, due on 6 November 2026, which adds a new multitrack-sourced remix by Cameron Webb to the remastered original.
