The Amha LP credited to Mulatu featuring Fekade Amde Maskal, the first Ethiopian album planned as a whole.
Mulatu Astatke, 1974

Released
1974
Label
Amha Records
Type
album

The album combines traditional Ethiopian music with American jazz, funk and soul, and as the first Ethiopian album planned as a single work rather than assembled from singles. Tangari of Pitchfork heard a weighty solemnity in its songs that he tied to the revolutionary period in which they were made.

It is credited to Mulatu Astatke featuring Fekade Amde Maskal and was pressed in Athens by Columbia. It is usually dated 1974, though Buda Musique's Ethiopiques notes place it in September 1972. Heavenly Sweetness reissued it in 2015. Buda drew tracks 7 to 13 of Ethiopiques 4 from it, though it chose a different take of Yèkèrmo Sèw.
