It reached 27 on the US country albums chart and topped the UK country chart for six weeks. It was also her first appearance on the main UK albums chart, at 78. Three singles charted on the country list: I Knew Love at 37, Never Mind at 58 and Anyone Can Be Somebody's Fool at 64.

The record began her long association with the keyboardist James Hooker, who appeared on every album until 2006. Outbound Plane later became a hit for Suzy Bogguss, and Gulf Coast Highway was covered by many artists, among them Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson. Mac McAnally sings the duet on Gulf Coast Highway and John Stewart on Sweet Dreams Will Come.

Steve Pond of Rolling Stone wrote that the fragility in her voice was extraordinarily well suited to the stories she was telling. William Ruhlmann of AllMusic later judged it a failure as a bid for Nashville success but an artistic success.
