Crazy Horse recorded it on 23 April 1990 at Plywood Digital, the studio at Young's Broken Arrow ranch, with Young and Sampedro on guitars and all four singing. Like the rest of Ragged Glory it was chosen from sets the band played twice a day. Rock and Roll Globe heard it as a plea for peace against the world's many ills, and Grammy.com suggested it may be the album's most resonant song.
Sugar Mountain counts 351 performances, the first at the Bridge School Benefit at Shoreline Amphitheatre on 26 October 1990. Live versions include a 13-minute one from The Catalyst in 1990 and a 28-minute one on Earth (2015), and the 2023 Toronto show released as Fu##in' Up renamed it A Chance on Love. Medialoper's Jim Connelly singled out the Pittsburgh performance on Weld.
The upload in the hypersongs web is the 2023 remaster of the Ragged Glory recording.
