Recorded over almost two years in London, Spain, New York and Stockholm, with Booga Bear and Jonny Dollar sequencing and overseeing it and Tricky co-writing Together Now and producing one track. Bernard Butler plays guitar on Woman, Eagle-Eye Cherry adds piano to a cover of Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man, and Gavyn Wright and Wil Malone lead the London Session Orchestra on strings. The album also covers American Gypsy's Golden Ring. It is dedicated to Don Cherry, who died in 1995.

Man reached No. 16 in Britain, where it went silver, and No. 4 in France, with top ten places in Austria, Switzerland and Australia. Woman, Kootchi and Feel It were the singles.
