The title song opens Drake's last album and carries its only overdub, a short piano melody he added himself. He never explained it. Robert Kirby admitted he did not know what a pink moon meant, though he agreed it might stand for death and preferred a positive reading; Pitchfork's Jayson Greene called it a baleful symbol of calamity, while John Wood heard the hopefulness of the melody.
In November 1999 the agency Arnold Communications used it in Milky Way, a Volkswagen Cabrio commercial directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris; the song was a late substitute, brought in from someone's own record collection. The album's American sales rose from about six thousand to 329,000 by 2004. Boyd said it was sad that Drake was not around to benefit. Aurora covered it for the 2023 tribute album and Hanson in 2024.
